Increases in Rent Pressure Zones are now to be capped in line with inflation.
Carlow and Kilkenny were both designated as rent pressure zones in recent years which means landlords can hike rents by no more than 4%.
However, this new development means they can only do it in line with inflation rates which are currently at around 2%.
Housing Minister, Darragh O’Brien, says if landlords go above that they’d be breaking the law, noting “They’re not going to be allowed to do that, the index in relation to inflation is published every month so if I was getting a rent review as a tenant next month it would look at the previous twelve months from June to June and whatever amount that is, if it’s 1.6%, they’re all published and easily got, that would be the maximum amount of rent increase”.
