Up to 2,000 fish appear to have died in what Inland Fisheries Ireland is describing as as ‘serious fish kill’.
It’s investigating the incident which happened near Aughrim, Co. Wicklow.
Fish mortalities, including juvenile and adult Atlantic salmon, trout and lamprey, were observed in a 3km stretch of the Aughrim River in an area near Coats Bridge.
Inland Fisheries Ireland says it’s not yet aware of the specific source of this harmful ecological event but they’ve taken water samples from the waterbody.
Its environmental officers at the scene since early Sunday morning after receiving a call via their 24/7 confidential phoneline – 0818 34 74 24 – and they urge others to use that should they come across something similar.
