Primary school teachers are set to receive training in teaching foreign languages, with Spanish, French, and German among the options to be introduced from third to sixth class students in the coming years.
The training programme will begin in the next academic year, helping teachers adapt to the new curriculum changes.
Schools will have the flexibility to choose which languages to offer, depending on resources and their student demographics.
Simon Lewis, Principal of Carlow Educate Together, highlighted the importance of the programme, stating, “Learning a foreign language is essential for students”,
“We need them proficient in another language besides english.”
