Kilkenny councillors have voted to retain the Local Property Tax rate.
It’ll stay at 15% for the next five years meaning an extra €1.5million each year will be added to the 8 or 9 million from central goverment.
Independent Cllr Eugene McGuinness had tabled a motion against the proposal from Kilkenny County Council to have the LPT remain at the maximum for the duration of the council term, backed by Cllr Maurice Shortall.
The latter says; “Unfortunately this motion was defeated, as the remaining council members voted to fix the Local Property Tax at 15% for the duration of the council term. I believe that preventing us from debating this every year severely restricts the council’s ability to react to any changes or struggles which may occur in the future.”
He adds; “I will continue to bring awareness and communication to the people on an ongoing basis as promised before I was elected”.
The local authority members’ decision follows a similar one by their counterparts in Carlow last week.
Cllr Peter ‘Chap’ Cleere says it provides clarity for both the local authority and for the public;
