A local campaigner says vulnerable people could be at risk as a result of the misclassification of crimes.
John Whelan of the group, SAVE, says they’re calling for a full investigation into how some crimes were wrongly classified in Garda records.
Two civilian officers from the Garda statistics unit appeared before the Oireachtas Justice Committee to highlight the errors that they have uncovered.
John Whelan told KCLR News this could mean people are being left vulnerable:
“There could be people out there living with partners who would have a history of violence – of domestic violence – that they’d know nothing about. It hasn’t been recorded properly.
“Potentially you could have lives in danger here. These are not just statistics, these are people’s lives that we’re talking about here.
“It’s very worrying. It needs to be followed up and followed up very quickly. We in SAVE are calling for a full review of the situation.”
