New naval vessel to be named after George Bernard Shaw

It’s been revealed that a new Naval vessel is to be named after George Bernard Shaw.

The announcement was made during a traditional Keel Laying Ceremony, to mark a significant milestone being reached in the build process for the fourth new OPV, in Babcock’s Shipbuilding Yard in Devon, UK.

Although he was born in Dublin the renowned Irish playwright has significant ties with Carlow where the local theatre is also named in his honour.

The reason for his links with Carlow is that in 1944 Shaw bequeathed several properties to the Carlow Urban council that he had inherited from his mothers side of the family.
