Over 400 teachers and Special Needs Assistants (SNAs) across the country have been forced to take a leave of absence after experiencing physical assault in the workplace, with an alarming 97% of the incidents occurring in primary schools.
According to new figures, a total of 391 incidents were reported, with 106 primary school teachers and 285 SNAs among those impacted by violence in the classroom.
Hazel McWey, the Carlow North Branch Secretary for the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO), spoke to KCLR News about the issue, stating that the problem is not confined solely to special needs classrooms.
McWey emphasised that incidents of violence have been rising across all educational environments, not just in settings for students with additional support needs.
“While special needs classrooms are a significant concern, the reality is that violence against teachers and SNAs is a broader issue affecting all schools,”
The INTO has been calling for increased support and resources to address these issues, urging both local and national authorities to take action to ensure safer working environments for educators.
