Old Leighlin started off where they left off last season with a six point win over Eire Og in the Michael Lyng Motors senior football championship first round at Dr. Cullen Park yesterday evening and their ability to get goals was the real difference between the sides.
The two evenly matched sides served up good football as they were level at the break Old Leighlin 1-5 Eire Og 0-8, the Old Leighlin goal coming from Seamus Kinsella. On the restart Eire Og took the lead but it was short lived as Cathal Coughlan converted a penalty at the other end in the space of a minute. Eire Og fought back and only a point separated the sides with six minutes remaining 2-9 to 0-14. At this stage Old Leighlin finished the stronger their third goal coming from Willie Minchin and the last two points from David Dowling. Mark Brennan was very instrumental for the winners
Eric McCormack scored nine of the fifteen Eire Og points
Final score Old Leighlin 3-12 Eire Og 0-15
