A one million euro programme of works being undertaken at the local Department of Psychiatry in St Luke’s Hospital should be complete by this May.
That’s according to the HSE’s newly appointed Chief Officer for South East Community Healthcare who was speaking on KCLR Live earlier today in relation to the issues at the unit which resulted in a court case in recent weeks.
The HSE was fined for breaching the Mental health Act following an inspection by the Mental Health Commission in November of last year.
Kate Killeen White was asked this morning if the service is now safe, in reply she said “today the service is safe in so far as we can ensure that patients are in receipt of safe care out there.”
She added “We will always strive to work in compliance with the mental health rules & regulations & with the Mental Health Act of 2001, but sometimes we will get that wrong, like for instance last November, we did not get that right.”
Ms Killeen White concluded “I can’t say that at all times we will always be operating in line with the regulations but we will certainly strive to do so”.
