‘Save the Barrow Way’ among groups appealing Carlow’s rejection of Barrow Blueway plans

Carlow county council’s rejection of plans to develop the Barrow Blueway have been appealed to An Bord Pleanála.

The council has confirmed to KCLR News that Waterways Ireland – who are behind the plans – are looking to have their decision overturned.

At the end of February all three county councils involved, published their decisions on the planning application by Waterways Ireland.

Carlow rejected them, while Laois and Kildare gave the go-ahead.

However, Waterways Ireland are not the only ones who are now appealing Carlow County Council’s decision.

Save The Barrow Way, who are against the plans by Waterways and who were backing the council’s decision have now appealed it as well.

It’s not yet clear what their reason is but it’s understood they have requested an oral hearing with all parties involved.

Back in February, Kildare gave the green light for the part of the development that would run through their county but now Waterways Ireland is also appealing one of the conditions that they had imposed – as is Save the Barrow Way.

They’re also involved in the appeal of Laois’s conditions.

An Bord Pleanála have yet to confirm when they expect a decision to be made.
