It seem like the sun had come out for the first time this week and Oak Park looked great.

The tension was evident as teams understood that they had to up their games as tonight the Friendly games were a memory. Division 1 is always competitive and Nexus All Blacks came out fighting against the Fleetwood Macs. Paul Cullen and co have been the team to beat over the past 3 years and today was no different with a 32-5 victory over the Macs. With Gillian Cullen, Elaine Ware Joyce Mathuna and Emer Gilmartin all contributing to the tally.

The Gillespie Supervalu Gotham Globetrotters played a tough game against Scraggs Sharks. The Sharks are a team that have played many division 1 finals. It was 5-6 to the Sharks at half time but Kieran Cahill’s team managed to pull some top rugby put of the drawer to hold the Sharks to a 9-9 all draw. This result could make the difference towards the end of the tournament.

Down in division 2 the KCLR Fluffy Radios were expecting a tough match against O Flaherty brown Legal Eagles and they got one. Husband and wife Shannon and Aoife Brown tore up the pitch and made life difficult for Stephen Byrnes team. Jade, Aoife,Tracey and Lorraine all showed great handling skills for the Radios but Shannon and Damien O Reilly and co proved the greater match with a 22-6 victory.

Tullys Tubbys were a strong match for the Buckley Clarke Flirties. The Flirties had Louise Gannon and Thomasina Bolger injured. But Erin Byrne and ultimately Adrien Bolgers last-minute try ensured a one point win. 9-8 to the Flirties.

In Division 3 The Honda way to 50’s took on MCFoods Inbetweeners, Caroline Kelly supplied one of the tries for the 50’s keeping it at 5-5 at the half time whistle. But Jason Byrnes team came out flying in the second half with tries from Sarah Byrne,Rachel Redmond, Michael Byrne and Jason himself. Mairead O Keefe almost scored ,but at this stage it didn’t matter as the 50’s couldn’t respond with a score and the game finished 14-5.

The game between the Dolmen hotel Divas and Reas of Sunshine was a very close game. There was only one point in it at half time. Shelley Brennan was making a great impact on the wing for the divas but John Corrigans Rookies had great handling skills and some great pace and despite the great support from Claire Dunne on the sideline the Divas could not hold off a 20-12 defeat.

Andy Butler is back with The Castlegarden Cobras. This year he has Kieran Comerford and Niall o’ Malley on board. All great names for the quiz that happened later that night but they struggled against Billy Purcell’s Netwatch Team Fearless. Losing 28-10 in the process.

But all was not lost because their was Bonus points available for teams that competed in the annual quiz run by Tommy Doyle. All teams took part and some even tried answering without using Google. But the team that took the top prize was Castlegarden Cobras with The Amazeballs Avenue coming in second place. The Buckley Clarke Flirties couldn’t transfer their skills on the pitch to the quiz table and duly lost with a consolation prize of some School revision books and free coffee from Lennons.

We are already looking forward to next week. We have ordered more Sunshine so we hope to see you there too.
