It looks like the Ukrainians living at the former Toughers Restaurant in Carlow have had their stay there extended.
About 150 men, women and children who’ve been residing at the property for the last two years were notified just days ago that they’d to leave this week due to fire safety concerns following an independent audit.
However, the Department confirmed to KCLR News that Carlow County Council was to carry out its own site check, the outcome of which could see an extension to the stay granted.
A statement issued to us by the Department overnight says:
“Following an inspection by the Local Authority fire officer, we have agreed to extend the contract until January 2025, on the condition that the provider fulfils all required safety conditions in the mobile home residences, where the people are being accommodated.
Those fleeing the war in Ukraine that are free to make their own private arrangements for accommodation in the area, either through the pledge or Offer a Home scheme, or by renting privately. Information regarding these options has been given to the people in Toughers accommodation.
The Department’s Relocations team will be in contact in January to provide details of the moving date and new state contracted accommodation that will be provided to those who still need it at the end of January. The Department acknowledges the disruption that these moves can cause, however we have always been clear that the accommodation provided is temporary and moves are necessary.”
