An organisation that represents taxi companies says they would like to see a village transport service set up for rural areas in counties like Carlow.
TDORA has members in Carlow, Waterford, Cork, Galway, Limerick and Dublin.
They were asked to appear before the Oireachtas Transport Committee recently where they put their ideas forward to solve the question of ‘transport poverty’ in rural areas.
Myles O’Reilly is the organisation’s chairperson and he’s told KCLR News they would recruit drivers from within certain areas saying “our service, as we see i,t would bring people into the village, it would simply operate within a confirmed area, say 15km outside of the village.”
He adds “the primary beneficiaries of what we’re proposing would be the retailers in the village & other services in the village and pubs in the village, in particular it would help people to get home after a night in the pub.”
