Having broken a record at the National Ploughing Championships, the organisation for younger farmers is set to do some good.
Macra members are the holders of the world title for throwing the biggest number of wellies at the one time, their 995 boots beating the previous tally of 792.
President Elaine Houlihan, who’s based in Kilkenny, has been telling KCLR News what the plan is for the footwear; “They’re in the back of a van, I’m after collecting them in Dublin, so they’re en route to Limerick to be all cleaned, disinfected and the tedious job of matching the pairs now so once we have all that done we’ll be donating 100 pairs to the site there in Stradbally that has the Ukrainians and the rest will be going out to national schools through AgriAware“.
She’s glad they’re not going to waste; “Everybody thought that we were after getting wellies and they’d end up in a container but my biggest thing was once we did it and broke the record I wanted to see them put to good use and yes there was people up there on the day that did find a matching pair and did take them away but look it’s great to see them actually going on people’s feet”.
