Work is to start on repairing a 30 foot sink-hole which developed close to Galmoy mine last week.
In a statement to KCLR news today Lundin mining says preliminary findings confirm its initial belief that a number of factors were at play when the ground there subsided on February 15th.
Separately, the landowners have told KCLR News that they’re in discussions with the mining company to seek reassurance that the sinkholes will not happen again.
Following an initial investigation Lundin mining which operates the now closed Galmoy mine says the sink-hole discovered there on February 15th sits on a naturally occuring crack traversing the mine workings.
The investigation carried out with the help of independent consultants found that the sink-hole was most likely caused by a combination of factors including the recent exceptional rainfall.
They are reassuring locals that the evidence suggests it resulted from an unusual and unique set of circumstances.
And they say the focus now is on repairing the hole in co-operation with the landowners.
