After thirty years as a councillor in Carlow, Walter Lacey announced he will not contest the local elections in May.
The independent representative made the announcement at the beginning of Carlow County Council’s monthly meeting this afternoon.
Cllr Lacey thanked fellow members & the staff of the council whom worked with him since 1989.
The news came as a great shock to other members of council this afternoon who have paid tribute to him calling a voice of reason, gentleman and a friend.
Speaking to KCLR News at the meeting Cllr Lacey said he made the decision some time ago but decided to make the announcement at the council meeting, though he told the Cathaoirleach beforehand out of respect for his position.
He said “After 30 years I have enjoyed it, I’ve loved it, there’s no other reason other than I just feel it’s the right time.”
Cllr Lacey added “I will leave here with great memories & with 17 friends from the elected point of view but with multiples of 17 friends with the staff of the council, I have had a great rapport with the staff down through those 30 years.”
His wife Bernadette was in attendance for the announcement & he paid tribute to her support.
