A local Councillor wants Carlow County Council to take control of Kelvin Grove, which had been used by the HSE’s psychiatric services up to 2008.
The property has since been put on the market by the HSE, with an initial asking price of €5m but this was later reduced to €1.5m in 2010 but it still failed to sell.
The listed Victorian building has been subject to vandals and has also been set on fire in recent years.
Sinn Fein’s John Cassin says the building should be handed back to the council as it can be better used.
