€2.5m awarded for new Kilkenny City library

It looks like the controversial former Meubles site in Kilkenny City is finally going to be put to use.

On Monday of next week councillors will be asked to decide whether or not to centralise the council’s various services around the city into Meubles and their offices on John Street.

The site was purchased for upwards of 6 million euro back in 2006 but has been virtually unused for the last decade.

There had been talk of moving the city’s library into that building but speaking to KCLR News, Cathaoirleach of the council, David Fitzgerald says they’re now proposing to keep the library where it is, but expand it.

The idea is to create a cultural quarter with the Library and Art Gallery side by side while the Meubles building would be reused as a new home for all county services including roads and housing.
