Three outgoing members of the board of Amber Women’s Refuge were last night celebrated.

Anne Reynolds & Ann O’Donoghue were founding members of the service in 1991 with Kay Meany joining them ten years ago. Together they gave more than 75 year of volunteerism.

Mayor Peter Chap Cleere presented them with certificates of appreciation for the work they’ve done during that time.

Anne Reynolds has been telling KCLR News she’s delighted that that work has been recognised “I feel very proud, it’s nice of the Mayor to suggest it and to recognise our years of hardship at times, though fun at other times and achievement most of all”.

She added “we were quietly working on with very good committees and it changed from thinking about it, bringing it to having a building and a very good staff and a new outreach service. We’ve come a long way and it’s going to keep improving particularly with the management committee they have there now, they have policies for everything, so everything will be grand”.

Ann O’Donoghue says “there’s a sense of achievement, proud is probably too strong a word.  But I need to say this: it’s not just the three of us, there was lots of other people involved, we’re just the three that stayed longest.  In that length of time there were many people who worked in the refuge, who were on the board, also the general public who were very supportive so it’s broader than us or me”.
