An Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council, Cllr. Michael McCarthy, hosted a National Commemoration Day Regional Ceremony yesterday, Sunday, July 14th, at 11:00 a.m. in the historic grounds of Kilkenny Castle.

The ceremony paid tribute to all Irishmen and Irishwomen who made the ultimate sacrifice in past wars or while serving with the United Nations.

This poignant event was one of several regional ceremonies held across the country and mirrored the national ceremony held in Kilmainham in Dublin. Distinguished participants included local and regional Public Representatives, Members of the Defence Forces, An Garda Síochána, and Religious Leaders. The ceremony commenced with a solemn prayer service led by the Religious Leaders, followed by the laying of a wreath by Cllr. Michael McCarthy on behalf of the people of Kilkenny, Carlow, Laois, and Offaly.

The Irish flag was hoisted to full mast by a member of the Defence Forces from James Stephens Army Barracks.  Concluding the ceremony, Cllr. McCarthy expressed his gratitude to all who attended and participated in the event. He emphasised the importance of remembering and honouring those who fought and lost their lives in wars and UN service worldwide. He acknowledged that some never returned to their families, and their sacrifice is remembered here today.

Cllr. McCarthy also praised the ongoing efforts of the Defence Forces in peacekeeping missions abroad. He highlighted the sacrifices made by the families of these brave individuals and the debt of gratitude owed to them. The ceremony was made memorable by the contributions of various individuals and groups, including the clergy, sign language interpreter, Mary Dermody, St. Patrick’s Brass Band, singer Deirdre O’Shea, and pianist Mary Butler.
