At least two seats in Seanad Eireann will be filled by local representatives.

Counting has concluded for the five vocational panels which make up 43 of the 60 seats.

The National University of Ireland and Trinity College have also elected another three senators each.

It remains to be seen if any additional hopefuls locally will secure a nomination from the Taoiseach with Micheál Martin and Tánaiste Simon Harris between them to name those they wish to fill the remaining 11 seats.

Several from Carlow and Kilkenny have sat in the Upper House over the years but this past term saw no Seanad representation for locals.

That’s all about to change though now – former Minister of State & local Green representative Malcolm Noonan secured his seat on Friday evening topping the poll for the Agricultural panel, however Kilkenny Councillor Pat Fitzpatrick lost out.

History was made since as Patricia Stephenson claimed her seat in Seanad Eireann – the first ever Social Democrat to do so, coming just weeks after a strong General Election performance for her.

Kilkenny city Councillor David Fitzgerald missed out on election to the Industrial & Commercial panel is thought to be among the contenders for the Taoiseach nominations.
