Maternity Unit in St Lukes Hospital has only one midwife to every 38 births says report

The maternity Unit at St Lukes Hospital for Carlow Kilkenny falls below the international recommended numbers of midwives to births.

Figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation show that there is one midwife for every 38 births there, the international average is 29.

It found that Portlaoise Hospital’s maternity unit is the most under-staffed in country.
