A local councillor says the government can’t leave workers at the Lisheen mine ‘high and dry’ when it closes this time next year.
Many people in The Urlingford and Johnstown areas work at the mine which is scheduled to shut down in October 2015 because there’s no more recoverable ore.
SIPTU are today calling on the Jobs Minister Richard Bruton to ensure new employers are brought into the area to compensate for the hundreds of expected job losses..
Councillor Mary Hilda Cavanagh says this needs to happen now so somethings in place when needed.
