Residents in New Ross in Wexford are campaigning to save their local Post Office.
They’ve collected over a thousand signatures on a petition, and they’re holding a rally in the town at 4pm this afternoon.
It’s over plans to franchise the service, which could see the business move to another location.
Wexford Councillor Michael Sheehan says the decision undercuts the Government’s work to protect town centres, noting; “I am completely opposed to this because it flies in the face of every Government policy from Town Centre Plans to circular economy, sustainable development, environmental and preserving the towns in rural Ireland”.
He adds “So, we are having a rally at 4 o’clock outside of the Post office in Charles Street, New Ross, to demonstrate our solidarity as a community, our solidarity with the workers and to stand up to the management of An Post to say we will not tolerate this downgrading, a town of 10,000 people deserves more respect than we are getting”.
