Animal welfare and sulkies in Kilkenny high on agenda of County Council meeting this week

A system of licensing and regulating horse-drawn vehicles in Kilkenny is to be created.

Kilkenny County Council have agreed to work with the Gardaí in enforcing an age-restriction as well as investigating whether a roadworthy test like the NCT could be put in place for sulkies and the like.

It was one of a number of motions before the county council this week in relation to horses and animal welfare across the city and county.

Councillor Breda Gardner suggested a specific policy also be drawn up for the protection of animals on roads, parklands and other open spaces.
