The Ferrymountgarrett Bridge, known locally as the Ferry Bridge, is now closed until the end of August while major rehabilitation works take place.
It spans the River Barrow, linking Kilkenny and Wexford, just north of New Ross.
Kilkenny County Council says the €1.5 million project will involve extensive repairs to the bridge’s concrete and steel structures, including works below the waterline.
Structural assessments carried out last year identified significant deterioration due to age.
