A Carlow Councillor is calling for urgent action to address the rise of toxic masculinity, urging stronger online safety measures, educational reforms, and greater support for parents and communities.
Cllr. Ben Ward’s comments come as Netflix’s Adolescence sparks widespread debate, bringing issues of gender-based violence and toxic masculinity to the forefront. With young children and teenagers increasingly exposed to misogynistic and sexist content from influencers like Andrew Tate, Cllr. Ward stresses the need for a comprehensive, society-wide response.
He emphasised that, in addition to stronger online safety, there should be educational reforms to challenge harmful gender norms and empower young people to form healthier attitudes.
He also called for better resources and guidance for parents and communities to help protect young people from the negative influences they may encounter online.
As the conversation around toxic masculinity intensifies, Cllr. Ward is advocating for proactive solutions to foster positive change and ensure a safer environment for the next generation.
