A Fianna Fáil MEP says a single State-body needs to be given responsibility for road death figures.
Carlow native Cynthia NÃí Mhurchú has been involved in discussions with the European Transport Safety Council to explore strategies in other EU Countries to help reduce road deaths in their jurisdictions.
The call comes road deaths unfortunately usually see a spike over bank holiday weekends. Already this year 69 people have died on Irish roads, one of whom was a young Carlow man, and a Garda Road Safety Campaign continues until Tuesday morning in a bid to prevent further loss.
MEP Ní Mhurchú says we need to have better system than Gardai appealing for dashcam footage, noting; “We should be speeding up all of this and certainly I think a police portal such as the one they have in the UK should be considered and should be rolled out, Ireland’s RSA has explored an online portal but apparently there’s been legal hurdles, there’s been data protection frameworks, there’s garda operational systems etc”.
