Cartoon Saloon’s ‘The Breadwinner’, Saoirse Ronan nominated for Golden Globes

With Irish nominees appearing in five categories for the 2018 Golden Globes, there’s great news on the local front with Kilkenny’s Cartoon Saloon and Carlow native Saoirse Ronan in the running.
Ronan is nominated for Best Actress following her performance in Ladybird, one of the few films to receive a 100% rating on movie review website Rotten Tomatoes. Ladybird received a special screening in Dublin last week and while it has opened stateside, it’s not due to hit cinemas locally until February.
Under the category of Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy (to give it the full title), you’ll find Saoirse Ronan named alongside screen veterans Judi Dench and Helen Mirren with Margot Robbie and Emma Stone also in the running.
The recognition for Cartoon Saloon’s The Breadwinner comes hot on the heels of scooping the LA Film Critics Association award for Best Animated Feature, and for the Golden Globes they find themselves in the running for Best Motion Picture, Animated. Boss Baby, Pixar’s Coco, Ferdinand and Loving Vincent are also in the running.
With Nora Twomey as director, The Breadwinner has also opened in the US and will hit Irish cinemas also in February of next.
