I think it’s fair to say that Altan have paved their thirty year musical path in their own way, a deep and obvious love of the tradition combined with a unique way of bringing out the tunes and songs. Their live shows are a thing of beauty, fire and calm in equal measure. Of course the roots of their music are deep in the Donegal heritage with Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh’s fiddle style reflecting her own fine musical heritage and her take on the songs of her home county.
It was a joy to catch up with Mairéad recently as Altan prepare to play at Kilkenny Tradfest at Set Theatre. We chatted about the new album “The Gap Of Dreams”, making music and the #FairPlé movement.
