Gardaí will be out in unmarked cars this summer to check for phone use on tractors.
It comes as the silage season is due to bring increased activity on rural roads.
Motorists are being advised to slow down and be mindful of slow-moving vehicles in the weeks and months ahead.
Inspector of Roads Policing for the Kilkenny- Waterford Division, Paul Donohoe, says farm contractors need to warn their drivers not to use phones: “I’d ask them to have a word with their staff about using phones.”
“It becomes an issue every year and we do an operation and we will be doing it this year again with regards to people driving tractors during the harvest seasons and if you are on your mobile phone, we will be putting unmarked cars out and we’ll be watching people and we will be issuing tickets or possibly prosecuting people that are driving big machines when on mobile phones.”
