The first steps are being taken to develop a local cemetery into a visitor destination.
A meeting of some of the stakeholders and local community near Clonmelsh has taken place in recent days to talk about what can be done to improve and promote the area.
The old graveyard is home to the ancestors of Walt Disney, as well as Kilkenny’s famous Butler family.
Local councillor Jim Deane says the end game is really to get an interpretive centre built there.
He’s been telling KCLR News that “currently there’s not much information there & we need to promote it.”
He adds “It’s a very old area, as far back as 1204 this area has been mentioned in papers, it’s very significant to St Willibrord who studied here & founded a monastery also just very near the site so it’s an area of huge importance.”
