There are concerns the national grid may not be able to supply all of the country’s electricity needs in the coming years.
It’s because of increasing demand from data centres, electrified public transport and people using EV’s and heat pumps in their homes.
Eirgrid is warning of ‘a potentially challenging situation’ between this year and 2028.
Business Editor Joe Lynam says demand is continuing to rise: “Airgrid is definitely saying that the demand for electricity, this report that they have just dropped this morning, is set to grow by 19% by 2034.”
“So example in the next eight years, there’s going to be a huge surge in demand for electricity.”
