Day three of Ireland’s premier cycling competition for women continues today, this time focusing on the Kilkenny/Tipperary border.
91 riders, including 28 Irish cyclists, will take on the 102.5km trek starting in Carrick beg and finishing in Carrick-On-Suir.
Yesterday Cycling Ireland made it a clean sweep of finishers on stage two in Gorey with Aoife O’Brien taking first, Emma Jeffers in second and Emer Heverin coming in third.
It’s a special place as the town has a big connection to women’s cycling as Former national road race champion Imogen Cotter explains; “It’s so special because it does mark this year is the fortieth anniversary of international women’s racing coming to Ireland and that was started with the John Hearn Memorial Stage Race, so John Hearn he held Ireland’ first international multi-day road race, so we are going back to where it all began, we’re going to start Stage Three from close to the John Hearn hardware store down in Carrick-on-Suir, so it will be a really special day and a really special way to commemorate something so special”.
