The Government has agreed to ban all under 18s from using e-scooters from next month, while a new licencing system will be introduced for all users.
Government Ministers today met with the Garda Commissioner to discuss further regulation of e-scooter use on our roads.
The agreement was announced shortly after lunchtime today.
The changes will make it mandatory for users to wear helmets and high visibility jackets from August.
And, later this year, e-scooters will be reclassified to fall under the same rules as other mechanically propelled vehicles. This means that they will require a licence and registration.
The discussions came after a number of recent e-scooter-related accidents and serious head injuries among young people.
A total ban remains on the table.
