Over €1.2 million has been made available for major works on the Waterford road in Kilkenny City, as part of the government’s Active Travel plans.
The funding was approved of at the recent Kilkenny Municipal District meeting, and will be put towards reinforcing the existing cycle lane on the road.
The work will remove bollards along the road from the Ring Road to the junction with the Nuncio Road, replacing them instead with a kerb, and is subject to a public consultation process.
In addition, the island in the middle of the road will be removed, to accommodate for the enhanced cycle lane on the road.
It was noted that the sum which was made available would not be enough to complete the entirety of the works, but would be able to complete “most of it”.
Cllr. Maria Dollard noted that Kilkenny County Council would endeavour to complete the majority of the works during school holiday time, and welcomed the developments.
“The bollards will be removed, and you’ll have safer footpaths, pedestrian walkways and cycle paths down the Waterford Road”, she told KCLR News, “so that will help to make it easier to get to and fro for people around the area in Loughboy, so it’ll be a really welcome development.”
She concluded by saying that “that will obviously go for public consultation and people will be informed of that in advance, so that’s one of the things we were told about.”
