The Committee on Water has been told to reconsider its decision to exclude water metres in new builds.
Fresh legal advice sought by Fine Gael says if the measure is not changed then the European Commission will not acknowledge Ireland’s efforts to comply with the Water Framework Directive.
Last week the committee decided to abandon a recommendation for meters to be installed in all new builds and refurbishments.
Fianna Fáil’s John McGuinness says “leadership and common sense” is what’s required to solve this debate over water charges once and for all.
Deputy McGuinness told KCLR a final decision needs to be made as soon as possible.
