Mary Coughlan is quite simply a national treasure. She’s fearless, truthful and wears her heart on her sleeve and it’s this honesty that runs through everything she has ever done as a performer. She combines that gift of the truly great interpreters, that of selecting and owning her song choices, with a sensitivity to the art and craft of songwriting.
She’s teamed up again with her long time collaborator Erik Visser to produce her latest collection of songs. She’s written and collaborated on most of the songs on “Scars On The Calendar” and it ranks with her finest work.
She called in to chat about the making of the album and we get an insight in to the process of making it. She later performed to a hugely receptive audience in Billy Byrnes, showing why she is one of Ireland’s great singers and interpreters.
