Gardaí now have the power to carry out roadside drug testing across the country.
The Road Traffic Act came into force at midnight, but the AGSI says its members haven’t received training in using drug testing devices.
Gardaí will be pulling cars over to test for the likes of cannabis, cocaine and heroin.
Senior Gardaí confirmed yesterday that the traffic corp have been trained, and that training will be rolled out to all officers in the coming weeks.
Anthony Farrell is Divisional Traffic Inspector for Carlow/Kilkenny, he told KCLR News that it was already an offense to drive under the influence of drugs – today’s new testing strategies are further adding to that.
