Carlow has been named as one of the cleanest areas in Ireland, while Kilkenny has claimed the overall top spot.

That’s according to the latest survey by an Taisce on behalf of Irish Business Against Litter.

A survey of 25 towns, as well as the country’s cities and some suburban areas has shown most towns have become very close to litter-free.

Kilkenny has once again been named as the cleanest area in Ireland – and is one of just 12 areas designated by IBAL as cleaner than European norms.

Carlow is also included in that top 12, coming in 4th place overall.

This marks a dramatic improvement for the town which just two years ago found itself in 33rd place in the league.

The worst affected areas include Farranree in Cork, deemed a litter blackspot, and Galvone in Limerick City, which was found to be seriously littered.

The survey has raised concerns over disadvantaged areas which were found to be much more heavily littered.

Sweet papers were the most common form of litter on the streets, followed by fast food wrappers, cigarette butts and chewing gum.

However, over 90% of the 25 towns inspected by An Taisce were recorded as clean.
