The head of the Good Shepherd Centre in Kilkenny says Ireland’s homelessness crisis is becoming increasingly alarming.

It follows another record rise in emergency accommodation figures released yesterday, which show that 17,548 people were living in emergency accommodation in April.

Noel Sherry says soaring rents and rising numbers of eviction notices are creating a “perfect storm,” warning that the situation is likely to worsen in the months ahead.

He told KCLR News that until there is stability around the world, the issue will continue to get worse.

“Many, many, many investors think that over the next 12 months, we’re going to have a crash. And in that environment, they’re very, very slow to take on investment, even in housing, and particularly in housing, because often crashes will see serious reductions in the value of property. So until our world stabilizes, private investors or developers to develop social housing or houses for sale are reluctant.” said Noel.
