Kilkenny’s World Craft Council City and Region status should be a key focus during Ireland’s EU presidency.
That’s the view of Councillor Maria Dollard who says the county is one of just a handful of locations in Europe with the prestigious designation, but its tourism potential remains underused.
She sits on the local EU committee and wants to use the six-month presidency to showcase the local internationally recognised craft and design sector to a wider audience.
Yesterday we outlined how Cushendale Woollen Mills in Graignamanagh had secured the tender to supply gifts to official visitors to Ireland during its six-month term hosting of the Council of the European Union – in reaction to that Cllr. Dollard told KCLR News; “I think it’s something that we should be looking at, we should be pushing out there because what we are trying to do with whatever resources we have from the Government is to show the best of Kilkenny and from my point of view we are not making the most out of that status that we have, that accolade we have so it remains to be seen what way this will go but certainly it’s a great start that Cushendale have been chosen to provide the gifts for people when they arrive so that’s a great start”.
