Labour MEP Phil Prendergast says the shortage of midwives in Irish hospitals is something that needs to be seriously reviewed.
Figures released yesterday by the INMO found every maternity unit in Ireland is understaffed.
The internationally recommended rate is one midwife for every 29 births – St Lukes hospital for Carlow Kilkenny has one for every 38.
Ballyragget native Ms Prendergast has worked as an midwife and says the shortfall must be addressed.
