Measures could be introduced so that train passengers who are delayed by more than an hour receive a full refund.

The Improved Rail Passenger Bill would also see delays of between 20 and 39 minutes result in a 25 per cent refund and 40 to 59 minutes offered a 50 per cent refund.

It’s hoped the scheme will incentivise Irish Rail to operate their services as promised.

Fine Gael’s John McGahon says it will increase trust in our public transport system, noting; “People want really high-quality, good public transport and we need to ensure that trains run on time according to their stated schedule and passengers need to have that confidence, particularly in rail operators, that that schedule is going to be adhered to or that they’ll be financial compensated for”.
