This weekend will see the new GAA playing rules passed at Congress come into effect.
Penalty taking and the advantage rule are among the changes for the game of hurling while the changes for football will see referees offer penalty takers the option of retaking if a defending player fouls before the ball is kicked.
A yellow card will not carry into extra time while the referee can consult with a neutral linesman concerning the validity of a score – both of those new rules apply to hurling and football from next weekend.
The new rules coincide with the start of the Junior Senior and Intermediate hurling league in Kilkenny and the start of Carlow minor hurlers Leinster championship campaign against Offaly on Saturday evening in Tullamore.
