A new suite of anti-litter measures sees Government set to crack down on dog fouling.

€250,000 has been earmarked to fund more dog waste bins and bag dispensers in parks and on beaches while litter fines will be upped from €150 to €250 from September. (Details here).

Alan Dillon is Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment with special responsibility for Employment, Small Business and Retail and the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment with special responsibility for Circular Economy.

He says; “This is not about targeting dog owners, you know, responsible dog owners are part of the solution, they’re often the people most annoyed by dog fouling because they clean up after their own dogs and others give everyone else a bad name”.

Stay tuned to hear from Minister Dillon on The KCLR Daily (10am-1pm).

While Irish Business Against Litter spokesperson Conor Horgan notes; “€250,000 spread across over 30 local authorities works out at about €8,000 per local authority, it’s unlikely to be transformative but if it targets parks and beaches and so forth it’s welcome and I think it’s needed, you know members of the public are exercised by dog fouling its not only unsightly it’s unhygienic and is a health hazard actually”.
