The hunt is on for a thief who may have struck two north Kilkenny churches.
Gardaí believe the same person could be responsible for a theft and attempted theft with both premises hit on the morning of last Wednesday week (6th Sept).
Sgt Conor Egan has been telling KCLR News; “The first one occurred at St Patrick’s Church in Ballyragget sometime between half past ten in the morning and 1pm, the culprit broke or opened a lock on the candle shrine and stole a small amount of money”.
He adds “We believe this theft is connected with the next one which happened approximately the same time at St Lachtain’s Church, Chapel Street, Freshford; the male entered the empty church around 11:45am, he attempted to force open a moneybox again located at the candle shrine”.
And also says; “In this instance the culprit was disturbed and fled on a bicycle so we do believe it is the one and the same culprit, probably cycle from Freshford the Ballyragget in less than half an hour, anybody travelling that road between half past ten and we say quarter to 12, 12 o’clock last Wednesday, a male on a bicycle maybe acting suspiciously maybe stood out or whatever”.
