Operation Pedestrian/Pedal Cyclists is taking place across the country today.
In 2015, a total of 32 pedestrians and nine cyclists were killed on the nation’s roads.
25% of pedestrians killed were over 60 years old.
Today, this initiative by the Gardaí and the Road Safety Authority aims to highlight the importance of road safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
An information stand has been set up in MacDonagh Junction in Kilkenny today, to provide road safety advice, and distribute leaflets.
Locals can also get their hands on Hi-Viz vests and arm bands provided by the Road Safety Authority.
Three pedestrians have been killed on the roads within the south east region this year, but to date there have been no fatal accidents involving pedestrians in the Carlow/Kilkenny Division.
