Carlow County Council is set to launch a recruitment campaign for summer lifeguards on its waterways, which would apply for the 2027 season.
A potential shortfall in lifeguards next year was brought to Councillors’ attention at a recent Strategic Policy Committee meeting, which prompted members to highlight the issue at the Council’s May meeting.
With schools, the media and water-based activity clubs all set to be targeted for publicity, Councillor Willie Quinn said that local knowledge would serve applicants well telling KCLR News; “It’s very important I suppose too that the people that are being trained for it that they know the area because the River Barrow as we know can be dangerous at times in areas with undercurrents and stuff like that so the people that are going to take on that role and to be trained for that role specifically they need to know that area and the water that they’re going into too because it’s very, very important”.
