US President Donald Trump has followed through on a promise he’s long emphasized.
In a lengthy address from the Rose Garden at the White House last night, President Trump unveiled a 10% baseline tariff on all countries, set to take effect on April 5th.
He also confirmed an immediate 25% tariff on foreign-made vehicles, while a 20% tariff targeting the European Union will begin on April 9th.
In response, Taoiseach Micheál Martin reiterated Ireland’s strong belief in open and free trade, warning that the imposition of tariffs could harm the global economy.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed similar concerns, calling President Trump’s extensive tariffs a “blow to the world economy.”
Speaking with KCLR News, Carlow/Kilkenny TD John McGuinness noted that while the market’s reaction remains uncertain, Ireland should be well-prepared, as the government has been setting aside funds in recent budgets for unexpected challenges.
